Last night Man and Woman went to find a costume for Man for the Big Day. Man decided months ago that he would wear the tux jacket Best Man #1 wore for his wedding. It was first worn by Best Man #1's father for his wedding in the 50's. The jacket is a classic.
We toted the Classic Jacket into a large retail chain created specifically for men-who-don't-know-how-to-dress-for-important-occasions. In the northwest, where logger flannel shirts prevail, dressing up is a lost art. We began to browse with bewildered looks until our appointed Associate gently guided us to the "layout table."
Laying down the Classic Jacket, Woman told the Associate, "Your challenge, should you choose to accept it, is to come up with something to go with this jacket for our Big Day." Woman doesn't often speak in movie-lingo, but something about the scene dictated the opening comment. The Associate snapped up the opportunity.
"What a great jacket. We can do one of two things; either go retro or add a contemporary element. But, when I see this jacket, I think of James Bond."
James Bond?!Not just ANY James Bond, but one specific scene. "
Thunderball. Bond emerges from the water, sheds his scuba gear, dons his tux jacket and makes his entrance into the grand event. That is what I envision when I see this jacket."
Woman tells the Associate, "We're getting married on a lake, so we can make that scene happen!"
Within 2 minutes of being in the store, Man is going to look like James Bond... classic James Bond... early Sean Connery-era James Bond for the Big Day. Woman is very much liking this, and with one look, she can tell that Man is liking this idea too. Man is whisked to the dressing room.
Man looks good. No denying. The Associate rolls with every tweak Man requests; he has a Bond scene for every tweak.
Casino Royale comes up a lot.
While Man is trying on options, Woman and Associate rap about men's styles through American history (Associate has a degree in American history). We agree that the 30's were the heyday for men's style. Okay, Woman has never thought about it, but the Associate has thought about it A LOT. We talk about the effect of WWII on men's fashions.
The Associate assures that the
Hart Schaffner & Marx label on the Classic Jacket is quality stuff. The fact that the Associate recognizes the name brand is somewhat humorous to us flannel-clad folks. Man and Woman enjoyed our shopping adventure.
Man and Woman are going to look GOOOOD on the Big Day!
